Traversing the winding gravel roads of Clay County, Kentucky, one encounters two long-time friends who are as different as day is to night. Caleb Davis is a barrel-stave maker: big, brawny and with a healthy outdoors appearance. His life is an open book to anyone who cares to read it. Nigel Jessup is a moonshine-maker: skinny, pallid and one who avoids sunlight as zealously as a bat. He does most of his work in the dark; in secret. Both have many adventures to relate, and the usually-humorous exchanges reveal much about the culture, politics and family tradition in Appalachia.
