Folks who have read my previous book, "From Peckerwood Flat They Came," often remarked it reminded them of Steinbeck's "Grapes of Wrath."To be compared to the works of such a famous author is quite a complement indeed. However, any similarities between the two books are purely coincidental. The primary difference between the two stories lies in the fact that Mr. Steinbeck's tale, although well researched, is still a fictional account spun by a recognized master in the literary world. My story, on the other hand, is a humble attempt to record the true-life story of my extended family as they continued to struggle for survival in the aftermath of the Great Depression. With World War II and the depression finally behind them, my parents seemed to be well on their way to full recovery. At least, in the eyes of this young boy, that seemed to be true. And then my dad began to dream... At the urging of Dad's family, the past struggles leading up to that point were forgotten. Our home was sold, and forty acres of raw desert land was purchased near Shafter, California. Fortunately, my younger siblings and I had just finished the current school year's curriculum. The Echoes of Peckerwood Flat were about to begin... Enjoy
