Immortalized in Churchill's speech to the House of Commons, the last stand of the Rifle Brigade and the Royal Tank Regiment at Calais in 1940 was a key factor in making the miracle of Dunkirk a reality. Intended as a rapid maneuver unit, the British troops found themselves encircled in the ancient walled city by advancing German panzer troops. Knowing that they were keeping the German armor from sealing off the Dunkirk beaches, the tankers and riflemen fought to the last round. The book also covers sites associated with the liberation of Calais towards the end of the war.
