Blue Skies, White Fields is a gripping memoir that explores the rigors of sharecropping through the eyes of a free-spirited black child. Born in Mississippi during the 1940s, Calvin Victor Robinson is a curious kid who likes to chase rabbits and roam all alone through the woods near his home. At an early age he learns to raise pigs, pick cotton, and even swim in a river with snakes, and a sneaky alligator. Through it all, he's content - until domestic violence and crushing poverty interrupt his carefree existence. Young Calvin's world turns upside down after he witnesses a shooting and is forced to say goodbye to an older brother he adores. As the problems continue to mount, he learns to hold his head high and walk with pride from boyhood to adolescence and onward to manhood. Betty DeRamus, Author of Forbidden Fruit, Love Stories From the Underground Railroad agrees, "This is one of the best books I've ever read about a black youngster coming of age in the rural South. In one astonishing scene after another, this true story captures the authors heartbreak and ultimate triumph. Readers will be enriched and inspired by his remarkable journey."
