Paul Clifford (1830) - "It was a dark and stormy night ..." One of the most famous opening lines in history and the life story of a man who is both a criminal and an upper class gentleman arrested for theft. Clifford's romantic interest is Lucy Brandon, but their relationship is complex and they hope to run away together. British author Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton (1803 - 1873) was a writer and politician. He declined the Crown of Greece in 1862 and was created Baron Lytton of Knebworth in 1866. He coined the phrases "the great unwashed", "pursuit of the almighty dollar", "the pen is mightier than the sword", and "dweller on the threshold".
