The Serpent in the Garden

This book assumes that unbelievers can profit greatly from reading The Bible, profit the same as from reading any other work of world literature, profit because The Bible speaks in a fundamental and powerful way to the human condition and does so beautifully. All literature teaches us about human experience; it does so through its focus on specific situations, which contain within them universal themes and concerns. Greek drama, Shakespeare's plays are set in mythic times and places, but move us because they speak to us in our historical time and place. They inspire us, move us, sadden us, change our lives. Even if we glean nothing for our own lives, we expand our understanding of human life in its myriad manifestations. I am not Antigone, nor Hamlet, not Job. But the plays about them grip me tell me about my own life, tell me about human life.
