Not Alcoholic, But... Will Piper

I knew I drank too much. But that didn't stop me doing it, basically all the time, for 36 years. Life wasn't complete without alcohol, though I never stopped to ask why not. I certainly never put it to the test. Alcohol was unpredictable, and that was sort of part of its excitement. But it could go wrong and whilst that was never fun, it did nothing to deter me from drinking again and again. Paradoxically, I always I felt I had overall control of my drinking. For instance, I operated a traffic light system, giving myself the green light to drink when I felt it was ok to do so. And on plenty of occasions I was able to give myself a red light too. People who have that kind of control don't have a real problem, do they? Clearly, I wasn't alcoholic... But once I had given myself the green light, then nothing would stop me. The weird thing about alcohol is how complicated our relationship with it is in light of how simple the solution. Simple, and yet seemingly impossible.
