At the end of the 19th century Mark Greenwood sets sail for the Far East. He has been beguiled by his three elder brothers' tales of adventure and opportunity. On the voyage he falls in love with Emily Alexander, who is returning to her family home in the Himalayan foothills. Their wish to marry is opposed by her father, who does not consider Mark to be a suitable match for his daughter. Mark is also harried by a fellow worker who seems to harbour a personal and deep-rooted grudge against him. Determined to prove himself, Mark begins work in the huge railway workshops at Jamalpur but he is fired after a violent confrontation with his nemesis. Fearing the end of his dream of marrying Emily, Mark sets out on new ventures which, while being risky, hold out the promise of great wealth.
