Points of Pain tells the story of Clare Brady, born in the north of England to two hopelessly-divided parents, middle-class Anglican Helen and Irish Catholic doctor Tim. As she grows up Clare is determined not to repeat her parents' mistakes - but when she goes to university and meets David, charming and handsome but hopelessly self-centred, she has to make some major decisions. Will she have to choose between her faith and physical love? Or can she succeed where her parents failed? Clare's struggles with religion, her family, her journalistic career and her children - and the two very different men she loves - are beautifully and convincingly told in a novel which proves from pre-war Manchester, via 1950s Oxford, to London, Spain and New York in the later years of the 20th century. The characters and their relationships will stay with you for a long time. Points of Pain was written in the 1990s but its author, Pamela Meyrick, died before she could finish editing it. It has now been revised and updated by her daughter, former BBC journalist Nicola Meyrick.
