In 1879, five teens - Time Walkers - leave the distant planet of Visio using a time travel device called the Tairsi. They arrive in the pioneer town of Coalfire, Oregon, where disaster strikes. Two of the five are afflicted with a mysterious ailment and die. The remaining young people are stranded, and must spend the rest of their lives in Coalfire. The Tairsi is hidden and abandoned for seventy-one years. In 1950, teens Lillian Grey and Marcus Bellanger search for privacy and find a legendary hidden cave. Thrilled by their discovery, they race back to town to gather their three best friends. The five discover the Tairsi, which has been concealed behind a rock wall in the cave since 1879. Together the teens possess the combined genetic makeup to activate the Tairsi. The group inadvertently travels to Visio, where they learn they are descendants of the group of Time Walkers stranded in Coalfire over seventy years earlier. They are told of their obligation to act as protectors of the Tairsi. Instructed in its use by an omnipotent but powerless Guardian, the five face issues of personal accountability, collaboration, and destiny. The story moves forward fifty years to present day. Lillian, now in her seventies, is faced with a decision. Despite her personal misgivings, she chooses to mentor a new group of Time Walkers in the use and responsibilities of the Tairsi.
