The Cataract is a new translation of Serbian author Milica Micic-Dimovska's last major work. Its name refers to one character's eye problem, but also stands as a symbol for the political climate that clouds the vision of all levels of society. Set among the Serbian intellectual classes during a time of national tragedy and oppression, The Cataract interweaves the narratives of its large cast of characters, and shows how political oppression turns brave thinkers into cowards, manipulators into the manipulated. Dimovska brings a distinctive Serbian spin to old issues of false authority and demystifying the dishonesty of those who trade in tradition and national pride. The tale also probes the relevance of intellectuals in a politically charged society.
