During the War of 1812, American soldiers engaged in an attempt to conquer Canada. What resulted in the aftermath of the Battle of York shattered a lot of expectations, and led directly to the burning of the White House, an act of retaliation that remains, along with the composing of the lyrics that would become the National Anthem, the lasting memory of that war, which otherwise we've struggled to wipe clear from the pages of history, because it's considered the country's first failure. Among the expectations shattered were the lives of an immigrant, an orphan, a widow, and a Brute.
