Life was challenging and full of hardships for a woman alone in the Old West. It was a man's world and many of the men in it were rough, cruel and held little regard for a woman. Women who were not able to find suitable employment or a decent husband were often forced to work in the saloons as hostesses or live a short and dangerous life as a sporting gal who entertained all manner of men in the dusty rooms above the saloon. Abby Dalton was widowed, alone and afraid of what her future would hold. She travels to the town of Rock Bluffs looking for a new start so she can avoid saloon life. She is fortunate to find a position as a cook and housekeeper on a ranch that is owned and operated by the local U. S. Marshall, Travis Hunter. All of the young ranch hands who work for Travis come to look upon Abby as a mother figure. They care for her deeply as they appreciate not only her cooking but her nurturing care of them as well. Travis, who doesn't realize his heart has been so empty and lonely, also comes to love the beautiful Abby like he has loved no other woman. She has rekindled a passion within him as he longs to awaken the desires that he knows lie dormant within her. He works hard to win her affection as he slowly and tenderly courts her.
