Sylvania originated where Ten Mile Creek and Ottawa Creek meet, an area favored by the Ottawa Indians. Sparsely settled at first, Sylvania grew after the War of 1812. Increased settlement, construction of better roads, and expanding railroads brought many opportunities to Sylvania. The Territorial Road that passed through Sylvania became the first thoroughfare between Toledo and Chicago, and the Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad laid track through Sylvania from Toledo and Adrian, Michigan.
