Sleeping on Concrete is a memoir chronicling Sam Ashkenas' transition from male to female while at the same time dealing with her schizophrenia and other various psychiatric diagnoses including post-traumatic stress disorder and autism spectrum disorder. She gives vivid detail of the years she spent in and out of hospitals while in the throes of active psychosis. Eventually her story climaxes as she is arrested for threatening the president and spends nine months in prison.
