Bill Lewis was 71 years old, nearly out of money and desperately in need of income in order to live. In considering his options he decided to risk everything, and by cashing in on some personal belongings, bootstrap himself with the cash that would generate while learning to paint well enough to produce income. During the next five years he spent 8 months painting in Mexico, 4 months each summer for three years in a row painting in France, followed by two full summers in Italy.
