Life was going smoothly for Shawn until one day he awoke to a new paradigm and life would never be the same again. It was eventually discovered that he had a rare spinal disease called Transverse Myelitis and Lupus. For years Doctors told Shawn that due to the affects of Transverse Myelitis, he would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. As Shawn began to live his life paralyzed from the chest down, a new diagnoses came that Shawn also had Lupus. Despite the doctors lack of hope, Shawn wasn't going to let his disabilities define who he was. He was going to overcome the impossible. After spending 7 years confined to a wheelchair, Shawn became the first person at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and among the first 100 in the world to receive a rare stem cell transplant using his own adult stem cells that could possibly cure him of Lupus. He gained much more than freedom from Lupus, he has regained the ability to use his legs and walk. Shawn is now able to walk, climb stairs, and is completely cured of the incurable disease of Lupus. The stem cell treatment and Shawn's undeniable will to walk again helped him prove the doctors wrong and conquer the impossible.
