Rick Schumacher is a long-time single father and simple 41-year old forklift driver for a factory that makes flooring materials. In his spare time he is also an amateur author of science fiction and fantasy. When his favorite band comes to town for a concert, a relatively unknown Finnish band named Midnight Daydream, he decides to take a chance and give a copy to Zabrine, the lead singer, at a meet and greet. Eight months later she returns with news and a proposition. A friend of hers in Los Angeles wants to buy the rights and turn the unknown book into a movie, and Midnight Daydream wants to do the soundtrack. The band has a worldwide following, but they have been unable to break into the American heavy metal market, so they make Rick a win-win proposition: join them on their current world tour where he can sell his books to gain notoriety and interest in the movie which will then increase interest in the soundtrack accompanying the movie, hopefully propelling them into the American music market. When they play a demo for him, Rick is blown away by the best song he's ever heard in his life. He agrees to join them, but doesn't really know what he's getting himself into. He's thrust into the highs and lows of a band on tour where he experiences all kinds of lessons, both in life and in love.
