Richard Corley Massey's collection of four short stories and one novella exemplifies this well. Although the tales that make up There Is a Season vary greatly-historical, military, Southern, biblical-each of the characters portrayed is at a crossroads, challenged either to make a choice or adapt to the choices made by others. Which paths will they follow-and will they like who they turn out to be in the end? In "The Importance of Being Earnestine," a female college student seeks advice from her favorite uncle about what to do with her life. "Voices" follows a World War II carrier pilot as he tries to navigate a mystery after a Japanese attack. In "Gabe," a rural teen runs away to join the Confederate Army. "Providence" recounts the disintegration of a woman's marriage and her struggle to maintain her identity as the good preacher's wife. "You Are the Man" retells the scriptural David and Bathsheba narrative through a cast of modern-day military characters.
