Set in January 2000. Eve Sanderson, police civilian and amateur genealogist, has reached a crossroads in her career. It is a bitterly cold day which gets colder as it progresses. Eve and her cousin, author, Raymond Wheels, witness a disturbance by the River Covin, Covinport, where an argument ensues and violence erupts between two men. Eve offers her assistance to millionaire, Peter Tytherley, who is adamant he does not want police involvement. Nevertheless Eve, gives him her business card in the event he changes his mind. While crossing Covin Quay Bridge, Eve becomes unwell. She is assisted by dashing passer-by, Tom Cransley, who looks like he has just stepped out of a 1940?s Hollywood film set. He drives Eve safely home before the falling snow gets worse and the roads become impassable. Several days later a letter arrives for Eve from Peter Tytherley inviting her to his London home for the weekend as thanks for her assistance in Covinport, as well as offering her a business proposition. There follows a series of events and mysterious occurrences, including several murders and inexplicable happenings, which Eve cannot avoid getting caught up in. Against the advice of a friend, she embarks on a journey to Cyprus to try to solve a murder and ends up becoming a suspect herself in three other murders.
