Superficial to Deep outlines how physical pain in the body is actually caused by emotional issues that have never been resolved and have cemented themselves into the psyche; thus causing chronic pain, ailments and illnesses. Massage therapists initially address physical pain at the superficial level of the muscles. Once the muscles of the body have had a chance to relax, the therapist is able to get to the deeper muscles that are holding all the physical and emotional stress and pain. By releasing emotional stress, the body responds almost miraculously in its quest to heal itself. Likewise from an emotional standpoint, when we live our lives superficially instead of deeply, we seldom see or address the deep emotional issues in our psyches that have held us back from living deeply, causing many, life-long problems in the body, mind, and spirit.
