A political campaign is popularly presented by its pundits as a game with the sole aim of playing to win. In fact, the players are held on a leash held by their handlers, who package them for a thirty-second-spot on television, as though they were a happy meal to be sold to the public. We deserve better than that, and politicians deserve better than that. We deserve genuine leaders, who offer promising solutions to the complex problems in the life of a nation of individuals with real life concerns to be addressed by those whom we elect. Forming a ?more perfect union? will require courage to settle for nothing less than fulfilling the demands to which thoughtful consideration of issues of governance lead. Such thoughtful consideration has to be undertaken both by the electorate and those elected by them, if the chosen form of government is democracy. This book is an invitation to begin a serious discussion of matters involved in politics, from the foundations of government, to how to develop solutions to problems posed by living in our complex world. It is an exhortation to do better in the future than in the present, given that politics affects us in dally life, including our social interactions with other nations in a world-wide community that can lead to economic disaster at home or abroad, or to war or peace.
