Set in the 1970s, Mind the Gaps explores the impact that racial prejudice can have, and has had, on three generations of a Black family in Atlanta. The play attempts to provide insight into the reality that racial prejudice not only divides people of different races but fractures Black families?-of the same generation and of different generations?-and Black society as a whole. On another level, the play is about different points of view among the generations of a family that I hope provides insight and understanding to people of all races and generations. Thelma and Sheldon are twins on the brink of high school graduation. Bright and serious, Thelma plans to follow her father?s path and become a physician. Sheldon tends not to think beyond the following week. When Thelma is the victim of an assault, her plans change dramatically, but she also begins to think about her life independently of her father?s expectations.
