Originally published in 1924. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are now republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. HOLD HARD! HOUNDS, PLEASE! A discourse on the fox-hound in field, covert, and kennel; with hunting yarns, character sketches from life, and some notes on breeding and kennel treatment By "Yoi-Over". FOREWORD: IT seems to me a great achievement for an exhuntsman to have written a book. While in harness the time of a hunt servant is so fully employed in professional work that he can spare none to indulge his literary taste, if possessed of any, and when the time comes for him to lay aside active work he is little inclined to submit to the drudgery of authorship. His memoirs are full of hunting anecdotes, and his experience endows him with much technical knowledge invaluable to those who follow in the service in vhich he has grown grey. The author of this volume is an exception to the general rule of his craft, for he has produced a book full of interest and instruction, which can not fail to be of value to those who follow in his footsteps, and of some advantage to the young M. F. H. whose ambition is to hunt the pack of which he is master. If foxes I refer to the animal and not to the authors family could speak I am confident they would not echo the wish of the prophet Job that mine adversary has written a book, as, in the present volume, much advice exists which followed must conduce to the death of the noble animal which we love in summer and pursue to the death in winter. I hope that sportsmen both young and old, professional and lay, may derive the same pleasure from reading Mr. Foxs book that I have.
