Sumatra killed three men of another tribe for stealing his honey barrels. This was applauded by his tribe but viewed by the British colonial District Commissioner as murder. Through the intervention of a European farmer Sumatra is put in jail for 20 years not hung. His wife dies in the forest on Mt Elgon Kenya with a baby in her arms. The baby is rescued by a cave dwelling hermit who is alerted by a colobus monkey. The hermit gets a nanny goat from relatives to act as a surrogate mother to the child who grows up half feral. After several near death experiences for the child the hermit consults a witch doctor and learns that the master spirit on the mountain intends to kill the child who can be saved only if he leaves the mountain. As foretold by the witch doctor a white man, a Jewish anthropology professor and refugee from Nazi Germany, ultimately comes and rescues the lad now five or six years old.
