A bootleg beautician in her hometown, Cherilyn Adams is the only black girl in her class of new recruits at the Bainbridge Maryland Naval Training Station. Cheri and the eighty-six other women from all walks of life and from all parts of the United States are forced to work, play, and live together under the same roof twenty-four-seven.
