Beginning in the early years of the 20th century numerous surveys have been undertaken along the Nile valley south-wards from Aswan. Reisner's work on the First Archaeological Survey of Nubia proved spectacularly successful and he formulated a cultural sequence from the A-Group in the 4th millennium BC into the recent past which has largely withstood the test of time.
