COLUMBUS AND HARRY is modern at the core as well as the surface. How does it do this? By focusing on the part of the story we never hear about - - how C. C. raised money for the trip. Thus, the script becomes a sly take on the age-old Hollywood shuffle - - panhandling the studio head (a.k.a. the King) for funds to make your project (the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria) a reality. What hip moviegoer couldn't relate to this? If we go a little deeper we can see that Columbus and Harry are in many ways like the classic pair of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. Columbus is the dreamer who wants to bend reality to his will, while Harry is the realist who helps (sometimes unwillingly) with that bending. This makes COLUMBUS AND HARRY especially enticing. After all, who hasn't had a dream that was shouted down or laughed at? And unlike most people, Columbus sticks to his guns and makes his dreams come true. In short, COLUMBUS AND HARRY not only excels at being modern - - it excels at being universal.
