The impact of the United States' (US) dependence on foreign oil is not recognized or understood by most Americans. Oil revenues promote instability and corruption throughout multiple regions of the world and hinder US efforts to spread democracy. Oil dependency leverages the diplomatic and political power of the US and prompts questions from other nations regarding the true motives driving US military action. Additionally, profits derived from US oil purchases in the Middle East are being routed to the same terrorist organizations the US is fighting. Thus, the US is funding both sides of the Global War on Terrorism.
The consequences of oil dependence are counterproductive to many of the US' interests and stated goals. The US economy, prosperity, and status as the world superpower depend upon the free flow of oil into the country. Oil dependence effects much more than the price of gasoline, it poses a threat to the long-term security of the US. Oil dependence impacts the ability of the US to effectively utilize its instruments of power. US oil dependency is a significant national security concern that the nation must address.
