William Henry Smyth
The astronomer John Lee (1783–66) inherited Hartwell House in Buckinghamshire in 1827, building there an observatory designed by his friend William Henry Smyth (1788–1865). Smyth's illustrated account of Hartwell - this second volume appeared in 1864 - illuminates both the history of the estate and the practice of contemporary astronomy.
