This Study Guide will assist students in the study of the British Experience of Warfare between the years 1792-1918. In particular, it is designed to help learners understand and explore the Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815), the Crimean War (1854-1856), the Second Boer War (1899-1902) and the First World War (1914-1918) in a depth suitable for A level students. This Study Guide has also been designed with the aim of providing useful support for A Level students but is also of value for those who are interested in learning about aspects of Military History of the 19th and the early 20th Century. This study guide explores the British Experience of War in two parts: the Aspects in breadth focus on long-term changes and contextualise the Aspects in depth, which focus in detail on key episodes. Together, the breadth and depth topics explore the British experience of war. This Study Guide explores different aspects of major overseas conflicts and the changing relationship between the state and the people as the government attempted to create an effective fighting machine and prepare the British people for war. Within the primarily military focus on the experience of warfare, this Study Guide also gives learners the opportunity to explore the political, social and economic dimensions and their part in generating pressure for change. This study guide is intended to offer a satisfying experience for those learners who undertake an AS or A level qualification in History. This Study Guide will also help to lay a sound foundation for those who go on to study history at a higher (degree) level as well as appeal to those who are interested in learning more about the History of Warfare as conducted by Britain during the 19th century and the Changing Nature of Warfare during the years 1792-1918.
