Chance C. Bouchard (Chancey to his friends) was a rookie cop in New Orleans during hurricane Katrina. He left due to some bad blood between him and some of his fellow officers. Adrift for a time, he follows the advice of a departing girlfriend and becomes a private investigator. He's opened an office in Baton Rouge. Now he's struggling to get his new career jump started when an opportunity to investigate a murder that happened in New Orleans, days after the catastrophic flooding of the lower ninth ward, arises. Due to some miscommunications, Chance must share the limelight with another private investigator from Monroe, La. Should he take the job when all his instincts are saying it's better to work alone? Together or alone do they really have a snowball's chance of solving such an old case that the police just put down as killed by looters and left it at that? And what about this would-be partner he's being asked to work with? Madeline Shane Doucet was also a cop in Monroe. That is until she shot her own partner in the leg.
