Adopted into royalty, Princess Rose knows that much is expected of her. As she is the king's oldest daughter, she will one day be queen. Although she suffers from extreme anxieties and selective mutism, she takes on her responsibilities seriously and does well with whatever task she is given. King Thomas, knowing that Rose must learn to deal with her anxieties at some point, sends her off in disguise to live among the villagers, right when Rose's sort of twin, Violet decides to poison her. Violet becomes unpredictable when her plan fails, running off with her old nanny to find Rose and finish the job. Rose, not fully knowing the danger she is in, moves into a hermit's shack on the edge of the kingdom, determined to stay there away from the villagers until she is called back home. Her arrival has not gone unnoticed, however, and Violet's old nanny soon hears about the stranger living in the hermit's shack. Once Rose realizes the danger, she must do what it takes to survive. Her life, and the future of her kingdom, depends on her decisions. Fear and a sense of duty battle within her. She cannot run away. She cannot hide. She must speak. She must not panic.
