Corri had carefully locked away any thoughts of Billy Wolf for nearly ten years. He was behind a hand-built stone wall in her head, and a gunman stood along that wall. The gunman's name was "work." Billy was the only guy she'd ever loved. They dated for most of her senior year of High school, and they broke up when he spent thirty days in County. Orange never looked so good, but though Corri bucked her Ivy League-wannabe upbringing; she couldn't buck it that far. Wolf Auto Services kept their tow trucks in exceptional condition, the pink script was tacky, but the Wolf family were charmingly old-school. Otherwise the trucks were new and sleek, with all the great curves of a muscle rescue vehicle. They weren't called to the job, but Billy and Corri watched in horror as a small car ahead of them slid off the icy road, summersaulting forward and then sideways before landing upright in an ice-stubbled field. A giant gray ghost of smoke rose up from the car. A haunting image. There were two people inside the car. The driver was a man and the passenger...his pregnant wife. They stared straight ahead through the shattered windshield; a thousand fissures criss-crossing it. Billy opened their passenger door...this was enormously beyond any towing job he'd ever done. Would the little family survive? Was someone at fault? Why did Billy go to jail?
