Divorce has lost most of its stigma in society at large, but it is still an issue for many members of the Body of Christ. Followers of Christ who have divorced - and especially those who remarry - are too often judged and condemned by others who believe the Bible teaches that divorce is not an option for believers. In some church circles, divorced Christians are treated as if they were second-class citizens in the Kingdom of God and are routinely denied the opportunity to serve in any leadership capacity. Divorced and remarried Christians fare even worse. The self-appointed judges among us routinely accuse them of committing adultery and then pile on the condemnation. Does the Bible really teach that divorce is not an option? Does God really hate divorce?The answer to both questions is no. A handful of translation errors have caused most English versions of the scriptures to teach something entirely different than they teach in the original languages. This problem is easy to fix if we apply stricter, more consistent translation standards to the Hebrew and Greek texts and render them more literally in English. When we do, the meaning of the scriptures concerning divorce and remarriage becomes clear: God does not hate divorce. He invented it and put it in the Law of Moses. God hates the treacherous abandonment of wives by their husbands. The Law of Moses allows divorced people to marry again; they do not commit adultery or any other sin if they do so. Both Jesus and the Apostle Paul taught that divorce is permitted. This book is intended to help divorced people who have experienced needless guilt, shame, and condemnation understand in their hearts that God loves them and does not hold their divorce or remarriage against them.
