Star Trek and the Ancient Past
Star Trek and the Ancient Past
This volume brings together multidisciplinary perspectives to investigate how Star Trek engages with the literature, art, archaeology, and history of the ancient world, largely focused on the ancient Mediterranean. Contributors are international experts in their fields and fan-scholars of Star Trek whose chapters engage with a range of theoretical approaches, including Classical reception theory, disability studies, gender studies, global studies, and media and film studies. Armed with these diverse scholarly approaches, contributors unpack the complexities of Star Trek’s references, allusions, and deeper integrations of antiquities, and how these engagements with the ancient past have evolved over the life of the franchise.
Chapters explore and put into dialogue classic Trek, alongside new and under-studied entries, including: resonances of Homer in The Animated Series and Voyager; Rome’s influence on the Mirror Universe in Discovery, Enterprise, Deep Space Nine, and The Original Series; Orientalism and receptions of Dharma in characterizations of the Vulcans, and the ever-changing representation of archaeology as a future discipline. Through these chapters, this volume addresses Star Trek’s continued and evolving relationship with antiquities and interrogates how these engagements communicate the critical connection between humanity’s ancient past and idealized future. The volume is useful to students and scholars working in Classical Reception studies and fan-scholars of Trek, students at all levels, and Trekkies more broadly who are interested in expanding their knowledge and readings of this 60-year-old franchise.
