Lizzie Bell is one of only 700 people in the world with Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a condition in which the bone marrow produces an insufficient number of red blood cells. As a result, she requires a blood transfusion every few weeks. Spending so much time in hospitals has given Lizzie a clear view of the things that kids need to make them more comfortable and less fearful while in the hospital for treatment. Pokes, Pinches, and Loose Wires explains from one kid to another why needles and shots are necessary for many people to live and that everyone has some kind of "loose wire" which makes them medically different.
