Thomas Rimer is professor emeritus of Japanese literature at the University of Pittsburgh. He has been the author, editor, or translator of many books, most recently two co-edited volumes, Traditional Arts and Culture: An Illustrated Sourcebook (2006) and The Columbia Anthology of Modern Japanese Literature (2005). Contributor Bio:  Bowring, Richard Richard Bowring is Professor of Japanese Studies at the University of Cambridge and Master of Selwyn College, Cambridge. He is co-author of The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Japan (1993) and has written a number of Japanese Language textbooks. Contributor Bio:  Mori, Ogai Born in 1862 in modern-day Simane prefecture, Mori was born to a family of doctors to the Feudal lord in the area. With the Meiji Revolution, the family relocated to Tokyo, where Ogai was to study medicine and the German language. He enlisted in the army and spent four years in Germany. Upon returning to Japan he started his own literary journal and medical journal, both of which were highly influential.
