Cassidy's Cat is appropriate for the 8 to 12-year-old young girl. It is a story about a girl who befriends a stray cat against the wishes of her grandfather, with whom she lives. The story is set in Tariffville, Connecticut, in the summer of 1954 and explores the activities of young girls during the 1950's when school was not in session. Among the activities discussed is learning basic baking, including a recipe for making baking powder biscuits. The setting is the childhood home of the author, and the book is illustrated with pencil sketches rendered by the author. Although the setting is very real, the characters in the book are fictional. Also included in the book is a discussion of Tariffville, the Farmington River, and the Metacomet Trail which runs along part of the boundary of the village. This is wholesome reading for young girls.
