Evelyn Ackley Christensen grew up on a farm near Bryant, South Dakota, during the Depression of the 1930s. Her first poems were written while she was in high school. Through years of teaching, getting married, raising three boys (in Cincinnati, OH), and becoming an expert weaver, her observations broadened and insights sharpened. Her early poems reflect a deep feeling for natural things and nature's power. Her loneliness during World War II is revealed in poems written about and to her husband-to-be in England and Germany. Her sensitivity to those around her shows clearly in her poems about family, friends and pets. Her evolving views of God, religion and philosophy are revealed in Chapter 5. Her concerns and perspectives about the world and the human family are shown in many of her poems. Her poems come from her heart and her keen mind. Her poems move one with their sincerity and humility. They present special insights about ordinary things.
