Completing his tour of duty in the Army in France after War World I, Jack Barrett, a weather-beaten, work-broken carpenter, tramps the country from construction job to construction job until, at age 29, after returning to live in the small town of Six Mile, Georgia, he meets and marries the love of his life, Lillie, and soon has a family of their own.
