After the attacks, word begins leaking out that Tillman had spent seven years in Vietnam as part of the ultra-secret SOG Special Forces team. The teachers, administration, and some townspeople demand his dismissal because they no longer feel comfortable around him. The story focuses on how he is prodded into fighting for his future and how, along the way, he comes to terms with his past. He is aided and sustained by the love and support of his students, the advice of an aged uncle, the interventions of a pesky CNN reporter, and the help of one of the states most powerful politicians who has vivid memories of the teacher from twenty years earlier.
