Shenhav details three classic elements of narrative?text, story, and narration?familiar concepts to those in literary studies. Although narratology has developed a conceptual framework and terminology designed primarily for the study of literature and folktales, it provides an extremely useful approach for the understanding of any kind of story in any context. To the classic trilolgy of terms, this book also adds multiplicity, a crucial element for applying narrative analysis to the social scienes as it rests on the understanding that social narratives seek reproduction and self-multiplicity in order to become "social" and influential.
