Heracles (=Hercules) was one of the superheroes of Ancient Greece: who inspired the martial ardour and emulation of generations of young men across the Greek-speaking world with his legendary twelve labours and myriad of associated exploits and adventures. The story of Heracles is one of stubborn and uncompromising endurance in the face of insurmountable odds: the chief-most of which is the enmity of the goddess Hera herself. Yet Heracles does not stand alone: the gods themselves are divided whether to support or oppose his efforts to complete the impossible labours set upon him as penance for slaying his own family whilst suffering a fit of insanity. While Heracles' superhuman strength renders him unbeatable against human opponents, he remains as helpless as any other mortal against divine enemies. Which is why various deities - Athena, Artemis, Hermes, and others - come to his aid during his various adventures, at the secret instigation of Zeus, who retains a fondness for his son by Alcmene and wishes to frustrate Hera's purposes and ultimately promote Heracles to godhood.
