This is the tale of Jefan and Turk, two boys who fled Spain's "holy" Inquisition in the early 1500's. By exile and loss due to their religious affiliations, Jefan and inherited innumerable reasons to hate. And hate they did. Separately, both these boys left Spain for the Americas, Jefan with a Jewish troupe and Turk with a community of Muslims. These communities collided on the mountainscape of southeast Mexico. I first heard their story while visiting Sephard, the community which evolved from the meeting of these boys. Sephard still exists in a large series of caves in a mountain there to this day. Both its origin and what it's become is unique beyond compare.
