Generalists provide a critical function in knowledge-driven systems characterized by fluidity. If fluidity is the smooth flow of knowledge among people and machines, generalists are need to direct the system toward understanding and use of root causes of both optimum performance and eradication of disease. Generalists are the guardians of context. They must understand the work of specialists and establish structures to access their work under appropriate conditions. This work considers needed characteristics and commitments of such individuals. In an environment where fluidity and expressive knowledge tools and models are available, generalists fill a central role in establishing the legitimacy of such a system.
