New characters are introduced as the story of a new group of expatriate Earthers in the Proxima Centauri star system is told. These are people who, after initially being welcomed by the native populace of the fairly civilized world, were eventually viewed suspiciously as witches and charlatans, and forced to live in poverty and desperation for their thousand year stint in the system.
