Now fourteen Margie and Will get the ultimate opportunity for adventure. During a thaw in relations Khrushchev offers an opportunity for a group of students to study at one of his leading academies in Kiev, Ukraine. Though the exchange proves to be all it promised, Will and Margie struggle with restrictions and idiosyncrasies of the Soviet world. It all comes undone when they travel with their teacher out of the protected zone. Separated from her, Will and Margie face privations they could never imagine. They come face to face with danger from insurgents who think nothing of killing for a pair of shoes. As U. S. and Soviet authorities search, the kids help each other as they search for safety.
