Hamlet

by William Shakespeare

The Tragedy of Hamlet: Prince of Denmark, is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare between 1599-1602 is set in Denmark dramatising the revenge Prince Hamlet is asked to wreak upon his uncle, by the ghost of Hamlet's murdered father. The story of Shakespeare's Hamlet came from the legend of Amleth in Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus in the 13th century. It was also retold by the 16th Century scholar François de Belleforest. An earlier Elizabethan play known as the Ur-Hamlet some believe was a earlier draft by Shakespeare while others think it was someone else's play entirely. Hamlet is William Shakespeare's longest play, and is considered among the most powerful and influential works of world English literature and even all literature. It was probably one of Shakespeare's most popular works during his lifetime, and still ranks among his most performed. Here are included a detail analysis of the play by A. C. Bradley and foreword by Charles Kean.
